Pilar de la Horadada: a paradise in the south of the Costa Blanca

The name “Pilar de la Horadada” originates from the title of one of the watchtowers, “Torre Horadada”,  built at the time of the Reconquest in the 16th century to spot the maritime approaches and the incursion of pirates. This tower was built on a rock with hole called the “Peña Horadada”. Later in the 18th century, the name was changed to Pilar de la Horadad, after the patron saint of the municipality, the Virgen del Pilar.

With more than 3,200 hours of sunshine per year and an average temperature of 18°C, Pilar de la Horadada benefits from an excellent spring-like microclimate all year round. Its coastlines stretch more than 4km and are home to numerous dream beaches of fine white sand, contrasting intensely with the blue of the Mediterranean Sea. Intimate and secluded coves formed in the rocks with golden sand can be found hidden along the coast. The beaches of Pilar de la Horadada are smooth and even, making them safe for all ages and allowing for calm and pleasant bathing.

The quality of the waters is exceptional, with six of it’s beaches once again being awarded the Blue Flag in 2022: Las Higuericas, Puerto, El Conde, Jesuitas, Playa de Rocamar, and Mil Palmeras.

The Blue Flag is an environmental quality certification system that is awarded annually by the European Foundation for Environmental Education to beaches and ports that meet a series of environmental conditions and facilities, a guarantee of a healthy environment you can safely enjoy.

The inviting transparent waters and biodiversity of the seabeds are perfect to practice diving and snorkelling and take in the numerous marine species and plants, such as Posidonia oceanica, a seagrass endemic to the Mediterranean Sea that forms beautiful green meadows and can only thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water. These meadows also serve as a refuge for many fish, crustaceans and molluscs and help to hold the sand in place, protecting the beaches from erosion.

For golf lovers, up to 6 courses can be found within a radius of 10 km from Pilar de la Horadada:

The shopping centres, yacht club, restaurants and cycling routes make up a range of services and infrastructure to be enjoyed to the full all year round.

Gastronomy is another of the attractions of this region. In addition to typical dishes such as meat and potato stew or meatball stew, you can savour a wide variety of paella-like rice dishes and broths or soups. To complement the nutritious Mediterranean diet, the area’s crop fields offer a wide variety of vegetables and fresh fruit while the sea provides shellfish, sea bream, grouper and sea bass.

In the incomparable natural environment of Pilar de la Horada, all these delicacies, washed down with a good wine, will provoke a lasting, indelible impression in your memory.
